East York held the distinction of being Canada's only Borough until 1998 when it was amalgamated into the City of Toronto. The fact that East York chose to remain a Borough for so long rather than incorporate as a city speaks volumes for the neighbourliness and small town friendliness that has been an East York trademark ever since its formation in 1924. Within its borders are the neighbourhoods of Todmorden Village, Parkview Hills, Topham Park and Woodbine Gardens and Woodbine Heights. Before East York amalgamated with the City of Toronto it had merged with Leaside and Thorncliffe Park to the northwest. But these two areas have maintained their own identities just as East York has and are considered separate by the residents there.
Bordered with many ravines and valleys it is picturesque with a village flavour enhanced by small local retail stores. But it is its proximity to downtown and transportation routes that make it a desirable alternative for many buyers who still want some green space and privacy.
Housing stock is a mix of detached bungalows and 2 storey homes, semi-detached homes, a smattering of townhomes (mostly newer infill development stock) and some condominium and rental apartment buildings. Pricing ranges from mid $200,000s to over $1 million dollars.
